Get the best of both worlds. Miles & Monk at Newport presents each jazz master as heard at the Newport Jazz Festival in the years 1958 and 1963. On side one, Miles Davis  sextet comprised of Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb steams through a hot set of bebop. On the flipside, the Thelonious Monk quartet comprised of Charlie Rouse, Butch Warren, and Frankie Dunlop stretch out on a pair of compositions.

Of special note is an appearance by Pee Wee Russell during the Monk performances as well as the fact that this album, in addition to Jazz at the Plaza, is the only non-bootlegged recording of a live Davis combo earlier than the famed 1960 At the Blackhawk album. And yes, this is the Davis sextet that made Kind of Blue.

Restored to mono, the record sounds incredible. Mastering engineer Mark Wilder comments: “I originally assumed that this album was going to need the most work to capture the original mono sound. After all, the Davis cuts were recorded in 1958, Monk’s in 1963, and both were recorded outdoors. Surprisingly, though, the master tapes were exactly like the original LP pressing and needed no fine-tuning.”
